Named President of SND Foundation

I was appointed the first president of the newly formed SND Foundation.  We created the foundation with these goals:

The SND Foundation, incorporated in February, is the research and education arm of the Society of Newspaper Design. The primary missions of SND Foundation are:

  • To contribute, through education and research, to the newspaper design and graphics profession
  • To develop and improve the capabilities of those who currently have (or have an interest in) careers in newspaper graphics and design.

Here’s a link to the article from SND’s newsletter.

Editor & Publisher clipping from Aug. 8, 1992 naming Howard Finberg the first president of the new Society of Newspaper Design Foundation

My Selection as First President of the SND Foundation

A short item in Editor & Publisher for Aug. 8, 1992, tucked between a story about a new Spanish-language weekly in Orange County and the week’s media stock tables:

Arizona Republic assistant managing editor and graphics guru Howard Finberg has been named the first president of the newly created Society of Newspaper Design Foundation.

The brief also explains what the new organization was set up to do:

The foundation, formed earlier this year to contribute to newspaper design and graphics, is the research and education arm of SND. Beginning next year it will take over some programs now run by SND.

Not a bad way to be introduced to the industry “graphics guru” is a title I never claimed for myself.
