Second Job: Information Services at The Republic

Editor & Publisher’s people column for June 21, 1997, included a short run of appointments at The Arizona Republic — and one of them was mine.

HOWARD FINBERG, director of information technology, also will direct the information services department for the next 18 to 24 months.

Two jobs, with a stated expiration date. The same column noted other changes at the Republic, including Toni Antonellis as director of organizational development, Pat Tucker as education manager, and this one:

STEVE KNICKMEYER, deputy managing editor at the Republic, was appointed managing editor/content

A reminder that in 1997 “information technology” and “information services” were still two separate things inside a newspaper — and that somebody had to bridge them.
